Travel Eats: McDonald’s Taro Pie in Hawaii
McDonald’s restaurants in Hawaii have custom items including SPAM (a SPAM McGriddle and SPAM served with eggs & rice). How awesome is that?
As you know, every McDonald’s location sells the classic apple pie! I am always intrigued when some countries offer their local specialty flavored pies. Their two seasonal pies are taro and haupia (coconut). I also heard they rotate from haupia to banana to taro through-out the seasons. I was talking to one of the employees and she mentioned that taro is her favorite out of the three flavors. During this trip, the taro pie was the only one available (YAY!). Since they were out of it at the time, we waited 5 minutes for them to fry a fresh batch for us. Note: Most McDonald pies across the states are baked but Hawaii is the only state that still fry their pies. Fried taste so much better! The crispy golden texture is unbelievable…
Recommended by a follower, I ended up buying a bunch before we left and brought it with me on the airplane. Once I got home, I popped them into the freezer for a day when I need a Hawaii pick-me-up.
Who else has a thing for trying different McDonald pies where ever they travel?
